Has this happened to anyone else?

My son wanted to read a book recently that I thought was too violent; his response to me was that the Odyssey that I has him read last year was waaaay more violent than this book?
I'm not sure how to answer this?

Math and Science

Hello,

This year we are going Latin-centered all the way:) Two of my children are wanting to go into the medical field (at least that is what they are saying this month); this is going to require more math and science than what seems to be suggested in the curriculum. How do I handle this? My son will be entering 8th grade and my daughter the 6th grade.

Thank you,
Michelle

High school transcripts

Mr. Campbell, I have been following your book, Latin Centered Curriculum, and think very highly of your work. However, I have ran into a problem. We have a 9th Grade Student and we have to make your High School curriculum fit onto our Umbrella School transcript. This has been tougher than we thought. How should we list the Histories and the Literature each year on our Transcript? What about Government and Economics?

'm about to launch my third Wheelock's Latin beginners' group over on LatinStudy. The group will begin April 17th and our first assignment will be due April 24th. All LatinStudy groups are free, but you'll need to provide your own copy of the textbook.
Further information is available at http://www.ravendays.org/latin/wh2007.html

Outlining

Ok!

My daughter started her first CC Fable exercise today. Although she is older, she has no experience in outlining. She did the outline and I think she did a good job. She was concerned, though, that hers didn't exactly match the model. It did say that it didn't have to match exactly and I told her that. I do believe she was bothered by it not matching.

To be honest, I don't think that I would have come up with the exact outline, either. How big a deal is creating the outline? I don't mean doing it...we're going to continue doing it...but I mean, if she NEVER becomes a Master Outliner does it really matter as long as she includes the info she needs?

Progymnasmata Curriculum

Hello,

I bought the book THE LATIN CENTERED CURRICULUM last summer. The part that I found the most interesting was the Progymnasmata. I have an 8th grader who is a very reluctant writer. She is a highly advanced reader but she just will not write and has a very low confidence in her writing ability. I don't know how to help her and the Progymnasmata seems like the medicine for her ailments.

Christian Studies for 9-12th grade

I have just read through "The Latin Centered Curriculum" and am trying to quick, fast and in a hurry put the curriculum suggestions to use with my 9th grade daughter. The book suggests a thorough study of the book of Job for 9th grade. The sample schedule has 2 hours slotted for Christian Studies. How do you suggest I go about this over the course of the year? Should she read it in its entirety first and then go back and read through, chapter by chapter each week? Looking for lots of suggestions that will spread this over the year, and fill up that 2 hours. (Study guide suggestions,

Is anyone currently doing LCC for High School?

I think it's too late for my oldest 2 children, but I would like to try with my now 8th grader. There are some state requirements I must meet for graduation, such as American History & Government, and I will try to fit those in. But I like the idea of studying the Great Books and rhetoric. Does anyone have any experience with high schoolers in these areas that they could share?

Also, my daughter has had an introduction to Latin using LC1 back in 5th grade. Should I just start her in LC2 after a little review? Or is that program too "young" for a middle schooler?

Wanted: Recommendations for Euclid Commentary or Annotated Euclid

Does anyone (Drew?) know of a good commentary on Euclid, or a good annotated Euclid. This is for my dh, who is a math major so not "scared" or ignorant, who wants to start going through Euclid this summer with our 11 year old son, who is fully capable of a good stretch in math.

My dh sees some ancient commentaries or completely modern (algebraic) commentaries, but what he is looking for is a guide to the actual propositions.

sciences

I didn't order my book from Memoria, so I am still waiting for it to arrive, but I do have a general feeling for the program from the yahoo group and various discussions online. Our program already looks somewhat similar to LCC, but I'm unsure about what happens in high school with the sciences. My son and I have been discussing the changes that we will be making and he asked me "What about Biology?" I don't know.
