Which reading program?

I am looking for opinions on the best reading/phonics program. With my first child I used Sing, Spell, Read and Write and he did quite well, but my second child did not do so well. Now I am preparing to start my third child in kindergarten and I want to try something new. I have been looking at the Phonics Museum program, but I have read conflicting reviews. I understand that not everyone will agree , but I really want to get the best program for my money.

A few questions about Prima Latina

Salvete . Just thought I'd post my question here . I have a few actually .

The first one is :
1. What is the difference between Ecclesastical and Classical pronunciation ? Being new to Latin I have no idea what this means and what the differences are . Am I correct in thinking that Prima Latina uses the Ecclesastical pronunciations ? Can anyone help me understand this a bit more clearly ?

Classical Writing

When is a good age to begin CLASSICAL WRITING? My oldest will be in 2nd grade next year. On the one hand, he's a bright kid and I think the Aesop level won't be too difficult for him. On the other hand, I don't necessarily want to push him; just because he's a bright kid doesn't mean he's ready for a full-fledged writing program.

Has anyone used this program with younger kids (my son is 7-1/2) with success?

Prima Latina/Latina Christiana vs Lingua Latina

Drew,

I just noticed over on the TWTM forum and your blog that you're doing Lingua Latina with your daughter. I had assumed, due to your apparent relationship with MP that you'd be using PL/LC.

I presume you've had a chance to compare both programs.

I'd be curious as to your thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Would you consider using PL/LC in conjunction with LL? Is that overkill, or a situation where the methodology is sufficiently different in each that it would be oxen pulling in different directions? Is it a question of teacher skill with the language making one approach superior to the other?

Greek in the Primary stage?

If this is covered in LCC, or elsewhere in the forum, I'd be happy for the direction.

Should Greek be started in the Primary stage, along with Latin? If so, when is the right time to introduce it?

I'm of a mind to start it on a two year lag, e.g. after phonics start on Latin through PL for a couple of years then, as they start LC1 introduce Greek.

Or is Greek best introduced later, say around 5th/6th grade with the (planned) transition to Henle?

integration back into school

My daughter is in the first grade at public school and really enjoys it. We want more for her, though, and will begin using the Latin-based Curriculum as the basis for homeschooling beginning in January (we will be taking her out of school). In all my excitement, fear, anticipation, dreaming, fear for the prospect of homeschooling I'm trying to make the best decision for my children. In that decision I want to know that if something happens in the course of our lives (homeschooling doesn't seem to work for us, or I die) where does that leave my children regarding their education? Using this curriculum will they be able to integrate back into school at the appropriate grade?

Does anyone do science?

I just started home schooling my son this year and I found out that he really loves science and I really do not love science. And he especially loves hands-on science--not just reading books about science stuff. Does anyone use a science textbook at the second grade level? Do you use a book that includes experiments and real life observations? I'm not sure how to tackle this one.

newbie question re: media

Hi,
We are very new at Latin-centered education. We just started Prima Latina this year and SOTW. I am trying to find movies for my kids that would be age-appropriate, interesting and support some of the history they are learning. We are in ancients as it is our first year. WE are also memorizing the history dates from Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum - Berquist - for third grade and reading American history or biographies that we pick up in the library.

PHONICS

I am seeking information on (1) when to be concerned about your child's reading/language progression and (2) recommendations for an intensive phonics program. I have used The Ordinary Parents Guide to Reading (Wise) referred to in the The Well Trained Mind, Reader Rabbit Learn to Read with phonics (software) and Phonics Pathways. I may need to use something else.

My seven year old is lagging in her reading skills according to a reading teacher who teaches in the public school system using the Spaulding phonics program. (My daughter is participating in a reading program this week that is aimed at students in kindergarden, first and second grade.)

Where Is Everybody?

I am a bit new to doing LCC and am excited and enjoying it. I was really excited to discover the forums a few weeks ago, but . . .
where is everyone? I was hoping that after Christmas that I would find some new entries to read. How is everyone doing? Are you all just busy, in the throes of teaching? I guess I am just hoping that the lack of postings isn't a sign that people are dropping the approach, because I am just starting!
