It's been a very long time...

since this board was active. So what have all you self-educators been up to?

I'm prepping to teach more of Lingua Latina in the fall. I also desperately need to refresh my Greek. For Great Books, I decided to spend most of the summer reading American novels. I read Moby-Dick last month and am now part way through The Last of the Mohicans. Huck Finn is next up.

School Year Reading

School year reading, anyone? I just read over last year's summer reading plans and that got me thinking about reading during the school year. Do any of you have time for reading during the school year, or is it just an educational focus? I have to admit that my reading is done in spurts. I either read like the Dickens or have quite a dry spell. I also bounce all over the place. I read a compilation of the writings of George Washington and now absolutely adore him. My favorite quote was when he was trying to spur his officers on and he told them to, "Exert yourself to manliness!". I'm going to try that on my husband when he doesn't want to mow the lawn. :D

Original Sources for Great Men series?

Hi Drew,

A useful thing for a parent would be a bibliography for the Great Men series, especially Greece and Rome. I've read enough of Greek classics to be able to locate on my own many of the stories in translation but I haven't read much Latin in translation. A reference for the parent such as (Bk IV, Virgil) or some such thing for each chapter in the Great Men of Rome series that would be very useful.

What are you reading?

Just thought I'd open up a thread for folks to discuss the books they're reading - whether they pertain to classical education or not.

Right now I'm reading Augustine's Confessions and plugging away at Caesar (in Latin), but I'm looking for some high-quality "escape" reading as well. I enjoy historical novels (ancient and medieval especially) and have a weakness for supernatural thrillers. Any suggestions?

Does there exist a "handbook" for Latin that I can use for myself?

I'm leading my three girls through LC II and Prima this fall. It's going well so far except that I find myself wanting to know the "whys" behind what they are learning. I want more in depth explanation than the Teacher's Guide offers. Is there a resource that would give me that? Say a handbook or something along those lines?

Thanks!

Martha

Henle Latin

Hello all!!!!
We are finally get into the "swing" of things with school around here. It is tough, but I am glad to be back into a routine :)
Anyway, the question is: I just recieved Henle Latin book 1 and should be receiving Henle Grammar book. I am going to be studying this myself. My 4th grade son is working through Prima Latina, and I was just going to learn with him, but I think that maybe it would be better if I worked on something that would be more up my "speed". I don't want to have to spend anymore money on study guides or anything, but I don't know how to set up my week with the lessons. How long should each lesson take? What should I do each day???

Typing in Greek?

I just noticed that my wordperfect 10 wordprocessing program has 3 greek fonts. I was thinking of typing up my memory verses & vocabulary & such up but I can't figure out which keys go with what letters.

Anyone know of a guide out there as that will tell me which keys correspond with which letters? Or will I need to experiment. I noticed that the shift key gets you different letters too.

Thanks.
