Classical Education: Some Distinctives

Classical Education: Some Distinctives
"I am frequently asked how the type of education I describe in The Latin-Centered Curriculum differs from other classical homeschooling styles. I offer the following as a brief summary of some of the characteristics of classical education as I understand it. - Drew Campbell"

Dr. Campbell,

As I read this article there was nothing in it that I disagreed with. What you described is Classical education. How does this differ from other Classical homeschool methods? If they're not doing what you described, what ARE they doing?

Just ordered 2nd edition!

And I'm terribly excited about it! I've been checking my Australian supplier's webpage every day and finally today I could order it! Sorry about all these exclamation marks but MAN I'm excited!

Okay. Deep breath.

I think I introduced myself here eons ago... my name is Jackie and I have a nearly-5 yo daughter and a 3yo son. I'm starting K officially with my daughter in August. Anyone else out there starting K soon? Would you mind sharing what your plans are? I'd also be interested in schedules. I'll share my plans and schedules when I've got my 2nd ed and have devoured it!

We are just beginning our journey with a Latin Centered Curriculum . I am patiently waiting for the new edition of the LCC to come out . So I thought I'd stop here and read the posts .
We just started Prima Latina a few days ago and my daughters LOVE it ! I am very happy with the program ( as well as my daughters ) . So we will continue along with it .

Howdy from Texas

Hey, everyone. My name is Jeff, and like Drew I'm an at-home dad who is homeschooling his kids -- ages 7, 4, 3, and 7 weeks.

The two books I use to help me decide curriculum is the WTM and the LCC, though in terms of schedule, I haven't decided which program to follow. Since my oldest is only in 1st grade, I'm not too worried. I am, however, hoping the 2nd edition of the LCC will give me a better idea on how to use the LCC with a big family.

Should I be here?

Hello Group!

We are about to finish up our 1st year of homeschooling and it went better than I ever could have imagined. Now that my feet are wet, I am pondering what path or philosophical approach to take with my girls. One is almost 8 and the other is 2 yrs old. We tried out Sonlight's Core 1 and it was okay. I ended up switching to SOTW for a more chronological appraoch.

I like the idea of exposing my children to the great works, but also want to make learning fun. Can anyone provide me with some insightful articles to read or your own testimonies demonstrating the successes or failures experienced with a Latin-centered curriculum? I would appreciate all the help I can get!

Ave!

These boards seem pretty quiet, based on the last posting date for most threads, but I'm going to say hello anyway.

My wife and I have just started homeschooling our oldest boy, who is four-and-a-half. I'm very intrigued by the LCC, having learned of it through the Memoria Press website.

We live in North Texas, near Dallas, in the U.S. I'm not sure what else to say, other than "hello, is anyone out there?"

Adults Getting a Classical Education on their own....

Hi, I am wondering if adults can get self educated the Classical way. I will begin homeschooling my elementary age children during the next school year. I want to also get an education on my own. Is that possible? Can I really make my mind more educated. I would also like to learn my math and want to know if you think Ray's Arithmetic works. Thanks.

Greetings and questions

Hello! I'm AmyBeth, mom to six kids ranging in age from 9 years to 17 months. We've been using the WTM approach and will be switching to a more Latin Centered approach next fall. Now, after reading Drew's book, I know to just meet my kids where they are at, so the both the 5th grader and 3rd grader (07-08 school year) will be starting Latina Christiana in the fall. So far, so good. Now, as far as classical studies and modern studies are concerned, I'm a bit lost. The younger kids I can start with the plan in the book. It's the 5th grader I'm concerned about. Should I just do the 3rd grade studies with him as well? Should I double up a little somewhere and have him do both Greek Myths and Famous Men of Rome in the same year? I think I want to make sure we're studying the US Civil war the same year we study the Roman civil war, so do we do that and not worry about the modern studies that go with Greek Myths year? Or should I just keep him on the 3rd grade track and just be a few years behind with him and adjust during the high school years?
