Once Upon a Time...
I thought we could post what books of fairy tales, myths, fables, etc. we are reading with our little ones. I love reading about what others are doing! Here is what we brought home from the library this week:
St George and the Dragon
Cinderella
John Henry
Cupid and Psyche
I also checked out a volume of Grimm's Fairy Tales but it has disappeared into the 5yo's room...when it emerges I'll post it, too.

I just got a new collection from Amazon that we are really enjoying - the illustrations are small, but it has multiple illustrations of each story by some of the classic illustrators - (it also includes some commentary - so it is not a great one for independent reading, but they are loving it as a read aloud).

Andrew Lang
Hello Jennifer,
I have found the Fairy Books compiled by Andrew Lang in the late 1800's and now published by Dover to be absolutely wonderful. I even buy them as gifts for my adult friends who have not outgrown fairy tales. They are listed by color as in, The Blue Fairy Book, The Green Fairy Book, etc.
You can find them at Dover.com or Amazon.com.
Thanks for your list.
Peace,
Gina

Thanks Jennifer for starting this topic!
Last night I read Lang's version of "Little Red Riding Hood" to my 4 younger dc. When I got to the end of the story & read that the Wolf ate Little Red Riding Hood, my 7-year-old's jaw dropped! She hadn't heard THAT particular version before! Then I read the Charles Perrault version where the woodsman cuts the wolf in half & the grandmother & Little Red Riding Hood come out alive. Well, she wasn't very satisfied with that version either. I'm wondering how some of you handle some of the more "grisly" aspects of fairy tales with your dc.
Thanks!
Blessings,

Favorite Fairy Tales
Hi,
We recently read Old Peter's Russian Tales by Arthur Ransome (traditional Russian fairy tales, beautifully retold). My children loved these stories!
Best wishes,
Jennifer
I didn't
I didn't know he had a fairy tale collection... I always hear MacBeth over at 4real talking about Swallows and Amazons though!
And... I did a bunch of anonymous posts I think... I'm sorry, I forgot to login first *blush*

We're reading "The Red Fairy
We're reading "The Red Fairy Book" right now. I am not changing the scary parts because my daughter isn't very scared of them. I have had to drop some words, though, for my own PC loving peace of mind. I dropped "negro" from "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" and some other equally objectionable word that I can't remember right now.

Another fairy tale recommendation...
This week, we read two fairy tales by Mary de Morgan -- The Necklace of Princess Fiorimonde and The Wanderings of Aramson. Both were excellent! Collections of de Morgan's work are almost impossible to find, but we read these two stories in anthologies of Victorian fairy tales. My girls especially loved the Necklace of Princess Fiorimonde, and I remember reading it as a child myself.
Best wishes,
Jennifer

Nice collection
I found a really nice two-volume collection called The Word's Best Fairy Tales. It's a Reader's Digest set from the 1960s and has been reprinted several times. It has a very nice selection of tales and color illustrations. I would bet many libraries have these as well. That's where I first saw them.
The ISBN for the set is 0895770784; vol. 1 is 0895770768 and vol. 2 is 0895770776. Amazon has lots of used copies for sale. I got both volumes for less than a dollar, plus postage.
