What do you use for phonics and/or remedial phonics?

Hi,
I have a 2 part question!

1) A few months ago my 8yo ds had some trouble sounding out larger words. I thought a little about it but blamed it on starting Greek. Well, Monday we started LCC 3rd grade. I can see now that when he reads multisyllable words in Hawthorne's Tanglewood Tales, he can't sound out the word. (I also asked this on WTM boards but thought I would drag this over here!)

2) I still haven't settled on a phonics program for my 6yo ds (struggling reader still). After seeing what has happened with ds#1, I would like to use a thorough phonics program to the end for him.

We used R&S 1st grade for ds#1 but dropped it when he was reading well. I thought of going back and doing 2nd grade phonics through them. I can't see my ds #2 handling R&S well. He doesn't have the strong memory my ds#1 has. And I hate to spend a bunch of money on something I won't be using again!
I am just not sure. :(
So, any ideas?

Thank you so much!
Christy

Phonics Pathways

We use Phonics Pathways. I picked up an older ex-library version on ebay. Your library might have a copy you could try out. Their method of teaching multisyllabic words is to break the words into syllables and read each syllable seperately, then put it together into a whole. We dropped seperate phonics before we got to that part with our oldest, I've just been teaching her with to cover up most of the word with her finger and then sound it out as she progressively reveals more of the word. That's what I'd do with your son, unless he needs other remedial instruction. I have been going selectively back through PP with dd and looking things she's forgotten or didn't get and doesn't yet understand. It's designed to be used both with remedial readers and beginners.

OPG here

I use "The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading" and it works well for my daughter. However, she's way beyond where we are in the book is.

Alphaphonics and Victory Drill Book

We have used Alphaphonics and the Victory Drill Book. We go through Alphaphonic (very cheap, maybe $25) for Kindergarten and 1st grade. Once my boys made it about half way through the alphaphonics book then we started with VDB (also cheap $20 I think). VDB is a timed drill book. The suggested times are given at the beginning, but you can start your child wherever he is. I find that learning to read with speed will aid comprehension later. There is a supplement pack for VDB that has worksheets and supplements greared for older children or adults that have remedial phonics problems so that might be an asset for you as well.
Anyway, I hope that you find the program that works for you!
Blessings,
Carie

Spell to Write and Read

I actually have an older set (Teaching Reading at Home & School and the WISE Guide). I was tired of wasting money on phonics programs so bought my "set" on e-bay.

I like the way the program explains the English language in a logical manner through the phonograms and spelling rules. They make a lot of sense. And they have greatly helped my dd to key into the details of words. Before she would always guess now she sounds out.

Another plus is that it is a spelling program that you can use until your children have mastered all the lists (which cover up to college level words.) And the sentences that go with the words in the WISE Guide would make great copywork as well. Wonderful insightful quotes.

Phonics Pathways here too

I tried Sonlight's Language Arts and didn't like it at all. Phonics Pathways has worked very well for my older two and I plan on using it again with my youngest next year.
