My son wanted to read a book recently that I thought was too violent; his response to me was that the Odyssey that I has him read last year was waaaay more violent than this book?
I'm not sure how to answer this?
Now that my son is 14, I've decided not to restrict his free reading. I make a real effort to discuss what he's reading with him, and to talk about feeding his mind with truth, beauty, and goodness. I keep suggesting good books, some of which he tries. His required school reading is from the "Great Books". I agree with your son - I thought the Iliad was extremely violent. Boys seem to like that.
FWIW,
Cindy
