Teaching Grammar

Hi. I am interested in hearing from others on what they think, about, teaching grammar with the Shurley English texts. I have heard that they are very good and the kids love the jingles that are used in this curriculum. I would like to hear any thoughts on this subject. Thanks.

Grammar Standard?

Maybe that's not what it's called, but I'm looking for an adult level book that would lay out all the English grammar rules, etc. Not a text, but more of a resource book that I can turn to if I'm not sure of a grammar specific. Can anyone suggest a good one?

Have you looked at...

Warriner's English Composition and Grammar (Complete Course)? It is a textbook, but the rules are laid out clearly. It's what I usually reach for as a reference. The other book I use is English Grammar for Students of Latin.

hey drew, thanks. i checked

hey drew,

thanks. i checked out warriner's and it looks good. but in trying to pick up a used copy, i ran across what appears to be the same thing, but with slightly differing titles. there is "warriner's composition and grammar" and "warriner's grammar and composition". both are offered as the "complete course".

do you, or anyone else out there, know if there's is a difference between these? i ask because i've found the "grammar and composition" at a very cheap price, but wouldn't want to purchase it if it were not the same thing.

thanks. -abbi

Hmmmm....

I don't know if they're the same, although I would guess so. Maybe someone else knows for sure?

Are you teaching Latin?

You knew I was going to ask that, right? ;)

If you've read my book, you know that I don't think formal English grammar instruction is necessary if you're teaching Latin thoroughly. Most modern Latin texts for elementary-age students assume little or no previous knowledge of grammar; they teach it along with the Latin. If your student needs extra help with a given topic, you can always provide that, but I think a full grammar course alongside Latin is overkill.

That said, I don't personally have experience with Shurley. Perhaps some other people will jump in.
