progym without a curriculum?

hi,

i was wondering if anyone has tried teaching the progym on your own, without classical writing or classical composition? for example, do you think it would be possible to teach the progym using frank d'angelo's "composition in the classical tradition"? thanks.

I think it depends...

on the age of the students and the willingness of the parent to do prep on her/his own. I wouldn't use straight D'Angelo for kids below about high school age, if only because the content of some of his examples is fairly adult. (I actually decided not to use D'Angelo for my own progym studies because I found the examples so off-putting.) But parents using it as the basis for their own education and then teaching the kids what they've learned - yes, it's possible. For many people, the time commitment for self-education and lesson planning would be prohibitive, which is why programs like CW are so popular. But possible? Definitely.
