Spelling and Phonics ???
I am following the Latin-Centered Curriculum suggestions for my 7 yo ds. I love the simplicity. However, I have been thinking about spelling. My son reads very well and loves reading. I read daily to him, he reads daily to himself and once or twice a week out loud to me. He does copywork daily, as well as making his own Latin flash cards for each week's vocab. Today, he wrote out a prayer request for the box at church. He asked me if he had spelled a word correctly. The word was "dying" which he spelled "dieing." Most of the time, he spells very well. I am wondering, though, if we should do a review of basic rules for spelling, etc. Any ideas? Or do I just continue to cover things as they crop up. I intend to begin Classical Writing's Progym next year. There is some spelling in that, I understand. Would that be sufficient?
Thanks!
I personally am a strong
I personally am a strong believer in memorizing spelling. We are using "The Grammar of Spelling" by B.J. Jordan. However, we spend very little time on it. What I'm finding is that because of our reading standards in the Classical education model, my son (age 7) is reading more complex things than his peers and so he has to look over the words only a few times before he remembers how to spell them. So he writes them all one time on Monday, we review them again on Thursday, maybe writing down a few tricky ones again, and then a test on Friday. It really doesn't take much time at all.

If it's just a matter of a word here and there...
I wouldn't bother with a full review. Some kids really need targeted instruction in spelling, butothers seem to do fine with corrections in context. It sounds like your son is in the latter category. :)
