First post ever!! Is there a prize? Can our homeschool still be considered Latin-centered if we study English grammar?

I am ok with my girls (almost 7 and almost 6) being exposed to grammar through Latin. My husband disagrees. He would like to see English grammar on the menu. I have decided to use First Language Lessons with them. Will this add much time to our homeschooling day? Will it be confusing to do both English and Latin grammar?
Thanks
Jennifer

Not to worry!

No one's going to revoke your Latin Zealot license! ;) I haven't used FLL myself, so maybe someone else can give you an idea of how much time it takes, but the type of grammar that kids typically learn at this level will only reinforce what they're learning in Latin, and vice versa. Mostly we're talking about parts of speech, subject and object, things like that. At worst, you may find them saying, "But, Mom, we already learned that in..." and then you and your DH can sit down and reconsider. Either way, they will certainly get grammar down!

We used FLL for my oldest

We used FLL for my oldest son (now 9) and I think it helped him both with beginning Latin and CW. It doesn't take much time. In fact, we normally did several lessons at a sitting and only did it once a week. We also didn't do everything in the book.

I will use at least part of it with my second son next year when he starts first grade. To me, the most important parts to cover in FLL are memorizing the definitions of the parts of speech and the lists (helping verbs, prepositions, etc.) and doing the exercises to find them in sentences. But we'll probably substitute some of the poetry again, and I like to start narration with shorter stories than FLL uses, such as the extremely short versions of Aesop's fables. But even with my substitutions, FLL gives me a good schedule to follow.

And that's it for us for English grammar programs with the exception of a diagramming workbook. We haven't started this yet, but I do want the boys to learn to diagram sentences in both English and Latin.

FLL

FLL will literally take 5 minutes a lesson. We found it to be a gentle and effective introduction to English grammar, especially memorizing definitions for the parts of speech & the lists of state of being verbs & helping verbs. My dd hasn't been confused by FLL & PL. I think it actually made her Latin study a bit easier.

HTH!

Easy Peasy

FLL will just support the PL and LC1... but be warned... it is so easy you will probably end up skipping some of the lessons because you already did it in PL!!
I liked the poems for memorisation myself... made it easier on me ;)
