Which Latin Program to use?

I have two children taking Latin this year (planning anyway ;) ) one is going in 7/8th grade and one is going in 5th grade. The younger one went all the way through PL while the older one only did some of it. I found Henle at a used curriculum sale and bought it. Now that I've looked over it a bit I'm not sure we (or maybe it is just me) are ready for it. I originally wasn't going to have the 5th grader do it but she didn't like PL very much so I didn't want to get LC1. So I guess my question is, what Latin program would you suggest for a 5th grader with minimal previous Latin experiance? If anyone has any advice for the 8th grader I would appreciate that also.

Thank you

Sorry you haven't gotten any response on this...

Well, I've worked through some Henle. It is something your 8th grader should be able to handle, even without any prior experience. Especially if you get the MP guide that goes fairly SLOW. Do you plan on working through it with her? Otherwise, she could go fairly quickly through LC 1 and 2, then move to Henle on her own. Dont make her go at the same pace as the 5th grader though.

The 5th grader would not be able to handle Henle, unless you have some familiarity with it, and plan on "teaching" it. Your dc probably dropped Prima Latina or didn't like it because they were too old for it. It is very simple, for that age it was probably boring??

I think with the new games offered for LC 1, that your 5th grader should find it much more challenging, and hopefully more fun.

Just starting

I'm sorry too that I didn't reply. Because we are beginners, I wasn't sure I could be much help.

We are just starting to learn Latin. My 3rd grader is doing the standard one lesson per week in Prima Latina.

My 6th grader is doing about one lesson per day in Prima Latina. We are doing the exercises orally and focusing on memorization. She'll start LC I soon, and we'll take it as fast as she can go. I don't have any experience with Latin either, so I guess I should say, "as fast as WE can go." We're going to keep going and see how far she can progress before college.

I haven't looked at Henle, but the Memoria Press catalog says, "It can be attempted by strong students with no Latin background as early as 7th grade."

I did look at a Cambridge Latin textbook recently. I think it would require a teacher's guide. It didn't look user friendly to me.

Have you asked on the TWTM boards or on the LCC Yahoo group? I think you might get more answers on either one.

Thank you for the help.

I went ahead and ordered LC1 and we will hopefully be able to do it faster than 1 lesson a week but I won't rush it. I decided on getting a workbook for the older one too, I figure the pronunciation help will be good for her (and me) and we will do it as quickly as she can. It also will be a way for us to get our feet wet before trying Henle. So they may not be on the same lesson but that is okay. I want us to have a good experience with Latin and to go far with it and to have a mastery of it.

Thanks again everyone.
