Memory Challenge

I just posted a blog entry about the importance of memorization. I've been putting together memory selections for the coming school year and realizing how very little poetry I've actually got by heart. That's something I'd like to change this year.

So here's the challenge: one poem per month, of the memorizer's choosing. No worries about the length or the complexity of the poem (i.e., children's classics are fine), although stretching ourselves a bit is always good. Our school year starts on July 5th, so I'm suggesting that as the start date. We can keep track of our progress here.

Anybody else in the pool?

I'm in ...

I kind of feel like I'm cheating, though, because I'm using Andrew Pudewa's poetry CD. That makes it easy ;-)

Me too!

And we're just starting, so the poems are really easy right now. Maybe I ought to focus on some longer stuff too. Hmm....

Anyway - I am in.

Please tell me that we will have a thread going for each month so that I'll feel guilty enough to actually follow through! Otherwise, I just know I'll forget and it will get to be the end of the month and I'll realize I didn't do anything.

"In Defense of Memorization" is an excellent article! When I read it, I had my children in mind. Thanks for reminding me that I need to work on my own education too.

Count me in!

Hello,

Let me introduce myself since this is my first post here. I homeschool Rachel, 9, and A.J.,7, and have from the beginning. Our homeschool journey has run the gamut from "relaxed" to WTM and now to LCE. I stumbled across Climbing Parnassus a year ago in our measley library, (CP and TWTM are the only "classical education" titles) and have read it twice now. Just finished reading LCC. Wow! Thanks Drew. There is so much wisdom and insight to be gleaned from all of you on the boards. I feel so inadequate to give my dc the kind of education for which I am developing a vision, but am constantly challenged and informed by all of you. Thanks everyone.

Sounds like fun!

Ds2 brings me his Robert Louis Stevenson board book every night, so I've nearly got all those down. ;) But I promise to branch out for self-improvement!

Great idea, Drew!
