Numbers
I introduced my 5yo to Roman numerals this am (she was wondering about the chapter headings in Mr. Popper's Penguins) and she was asking me about where "our"numbers come from. We looked it up briefly in the encyclopedia but I'm looking for some living book recommendations. Any suggestions?
TIA
Jennifer
PS Now she's writing everyone's ages in Roman numerals. And I'm not sure how to do 34-is it XXXIV?

Roman Numerals picture book
I found a picture book at our library called "Roman Numerals I to MM: Numerabilia Romana Uno ad Duo Mila" by Arthur Geisert. Here's the publisher's blurb: "Arthur Geisert brings Roman numerals to life, using a farm of pigs as his abacus. First, the seven Roman numerals -- I, V, X, L, C, D and M -- are equated with the correct number of piglets. Yes, there are one thousand pigs in the etching for M! Then the reader may practice counting items --hot-air balloons, gopher holes, and more -- as the remarkable adventure unfolds."
This is a great book! My 5 & 7 year old love it! Hope this helps!
God Bless!

I don't have this one, but
I don't have this one, but I've heard good things about it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0688141188 ... Perhaps your library has it?
I loved the article on
I loved the article on Wikipedia on Arabic numbers. As for living book, I have no idea. I have been thinking of setting up my own Wiki for living books. Now I have more fuel for the fire of getting one set up!

yes
You can look in The Joy of Mathematics which is by Theoni Pappas. She explains the evolution of the arabic numbers right in the beginning.
And yes, I believe that IS the way to write 34 :)

Numbers
Hi. I think its great to teach young children numbers. I have a two year old that is counting and I read somewhere that it would be very good if they learned quanity and then the figure. For example there are poster boards that are 12x12 and I have placed red dots to represent the number quantity. I show him the card say the number it represents and show another. There is a good book out there titled: How to Teach Your Baby Math by Glenn Domain. Well I am just beginning but I will let everyone knows how it goes.

Number book
Hi Jennifer,
Roman Numerals I to MM is the only one I know of. I haven't seen it in person, but it's on my wishlist. :o)
Oh, wait, you're asking about Arabic... I think there's a "history of numbers" book out there somewhere. In the Michael Olaf catalog, maybe?
Sorry, not much help this morning...
